A country steeped in lager brewing tradition, there’s no shortage of flavor to be found in the beer halls of Germany. Nevertheless, the German beer purity law (Reinheitsgebot) which forbids beer to be produced with anything but barley, hops, and water, has been more of a hindrance than a help currently. To circumvent that, entrepreneurial German brewers are brewing beers specifically for export to other countries around the world. With the exception of pilsners, Dortmunder and Vienna lagers, the bocks (lagers) of Germany tend to be more malty, have more body, and hold up to cuisine more readily. From roast and dark chocolate flavors present in Schwarzbiers (black), to toasty and smokey flavors in Rauchbiers (smoked), rest assured there is a flavor profile to be found in German lagers to complement any food.
